How I Turned a Failing Project Into a Successful One and Millions of $ Saved with One Key Change

πŸ’ͺ How I turned a failing project into a successful one and millions of $ saved with One Key Change

Sounds like clickbait, right? It's not. This story taught me the power of alignment and how people working together with clarity can move mountains.

Back in 2012, I was tasked with rescuing a project in western Canada: fabricating industrial modules for an oil facility.

When I joined, the project was a complete mess:

❌ Engineering documents were incomplete.

❌ Designs were changing mid-fabrication.

❌ Misalignment across teams and unclear requirements.

❌ Too many contractors and vendors involved.

❌ Disorganization on both the client and contractor sides.

The result? Delays, quality issues, skyrocketing costs, and zero accountability. It was the perfect recipe for disaster.

I rolled up my sleeves and started fixing the obvious issues:

β˜‘οΈ Finalizing engineering.

β˜‘οΈ Cutting down unnecessary contractors.

β˜‘οΈ Defining roles and responsibilities.

🀷 But something was still missing: the team wasn't engaged. They were exhausted, frustrated, and disconnected.

That's when we introduced a simple yet powerful strategy: GOAL: ZERO PUNCH.

This wasn't just a slogan. It became our rallying cry:

πŸ“’ Clear Communication: Everyone knew the goal and that performance would be measured against it.

πŸ§‘β€πŸ§‘β€πŸ§’β€πŸ§’ Team Involvement: From managers to apprentices, we encouraged ideas on how to meet the goal.

βš’οΈ Tools for Success: We created new inspection forms, KPIs, and communication protocols.

πŸŽ‰ Recognition: When a module achieved ZERO punch, we celebrated and rewarded the most innovative contributors.

The results were extraordinary:

πŸŽ–οΈ Fabrication time was cut by 35%.

πŸ“‰ Costs dropped from $12M per module to $9.3M, saving $2.7M per set.

πŸ’Έ Over 5 sets, total savings exceeded $13M.

🚧 Installation on-site was smoother, faster, and cheaper.

This wasn't just about money. It was about creating a CHAMPION team:

πŸ† CHallenging goals that trigger focus.

πŸ† Achievable with action.

πŸ† Measureable with clarity.

πŸ† Purpose driven that everyone knew.

πŸ† Inclusive ownership.

πŸ† Organized with protocols and processes

πŸ† Nurturing a culture of success.
