The Day I Screwed Up and Shut Down an Oil & Gas Facility 👇
We've all been there. That moment when you realize you've made a mistake. It happens to the best of us, but what sets you apart is how you own it and fix it.
Let me take you back to 2005. I was working at a heavy oil upgrading facility in Venezuela. Fresh into a new role as a mechanical reliability engineer (a job outside my expertise in project engineering) but I was eager to prove myself.
Things were going great. I had the support of a great team, and my confidence grew with each success. Until the day it didn't.
A heat exchanger leaked, and the production unit had to shut down. I designed an engineering solution: a bypass pipe to keep things running. I personally checked everything on-site and gave my instructions. Or so I thought.
At 10 PM when home ready to bed, I got a call from the plant: "The bypass can't be installed. There's not enough space."
I was crushed. But instead of dwelling on it, I got back in my car, drove 45 minutes to the plant at 11 PM, and worked with the night team to redesign the solution. By 6 AM, the job was done, and production resumed.
The next day, my boss asked what happened. My response? "I screwed up." No excuses. Just accountability.
Did it hurt my performance review? Sure. But honesty and action mattered more.
Here's what I learned:

2️⃣ Stay humble. Overconfidence blinds you to feedback. Listen.
3️⃣ Learn and let go. Mistakes are lessons, not life sentences.
